“I’ve read ten different checklists and they all say something different”

That is the honest experience of most students starting a German student visa application. Forums are out of date, consultants contradict each other, and the embassy’s own page assumes you already know the vocabulary. Meanwhile the deadline for your intake is fixed and the appointment slots are running out.

The German student visa is not difficult in the way people fear. It is unforgiving, which is different. There is a correct sequence, a correct set of documents, and a correct amount of money in the correct kind of account. Do all of it and approval is the normal outcome. Miss one piece and the file is incomplete, and an incomplete file is the single biggest cause of delay.

What’s actually involved

The sequence matters as much as the contents. You cannot do these in a different order.

1. Secure your admission letter. Conditional or unconditional, from a recognised German university. Nothing else can begin without it.
2. Complete your APS certificate. Your academic documents are verified by the APS office in India. Allow 4 to 8 weeks; this is the step people underestimate most.
3. Open your blocked account. €11,904 deposited for the year, released at €992 per month after you arrive.
4. Arrange health insurance. Incoming or travel cover for the period before enrolment, then public student insurance once you are in Germany.
5. Book your appointment. The national (type D) visa, through VFS or the German consulate. Slots are limited and disappear quickly around intake season.
6. Attend the interview. Documents submitted, questions answered about your course, your funding and your plans.
7. Receive your visa and travel. Typically 6 to 12 weeks after the appointment.

Start the whole thing 12 to 18 months before your intake. That is not a padded estimate — APS and blocked account alone can consume three months.

What usually goes wrong

Booking the appointment too early. Students grab a slot because slots are scarce, then find the blocked account or APS will not be ready in time. You lose the slot and the next one may be past your intake.

Documents that disagree with each other. Your SOP says you want to specialise in one field, your application says another. Your degree certificate shows a name your passport does not. Individually trivial, collectively a reason to doubt the file.

Underestimating APS. Four to eight weeks is normal, and it can be longer if your university is slow to respond to a verification request. Students routinely leave this until last and it becomes the thing that costs them an intake.

Financial proof that is technically short. Bank transfer fees deducted from the deposit, or an amount budgeted from last year’s figure. The requirement is a floor, not a target.

Treating the interview as a formality. It is short, but it is a genuine check. Answering “because Germany is cheap” to why you chose the country, with no sense of the course itself, does not help you.

Applying for the wrong visa category. A Schengen visa cannot be converted to a student visa once you are in Germany. This mistake costs an entire application cycle.
